When I was a young mother, I had a lot of thoughts about other people's kids. Many, I now realize, were not very nice. Alhamdullilah I was not obnoxious enough to say my thoughts out loud, but I admit that I sat in silent smugness and judgment many times.

How many times do our children do things that we just don’t understand? They throw a tantrum out of nowhere, they suddenly start behaving badly, and they seem to push all of the family’s buttons without reason.

“He’s a genius at math!” 

“Oh, she’s shy. Give her some time to warm up.” 

“Hey! That was a great shot! You’re really good at basketball!” 

In the Quran, Allah commands humankind: 

“Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So, call upon Him by them, and keep away from those who abuse His Names. They will be punished for what they used to do.” 

(Surah Al-Araf, 7:180)
