SAMPLE LETTER TO TEACHER

Re: Hafsa Nafees and religious holiday this week

Monday October 31, 2005

Dear Ms. Jones:

I am the mother of Hafsa Nafees, who is in your fourth grade class. Hafsa has benefited greatly from your help as a teacher so far this year, and I hope she continues to do so under your guidance.

I would like to bring to your attention the issue of Eid ul-Fitr, a Muslim religious holiday, expected to fall at the end of this week.

As you may know, Muslims were fasting during most of October, which was when the month of Ramadan fell this year. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is notable for its emphasis on seeking closeness to God through fasting, prayer and charity. This year, Ramadan began on October 5.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. It is a religious holiday and a time of joy and celebration.

Because the Islamic calendar follows the lunar calendar and actual sighting of the moon is used to determine the date of occasions like Eid ul-Fitr, there is a possibility the religious holiday could fall on Monday October 23, 2006 or Tuesday October 24, 2006 this year.

In view of this, we would like to inform you that Hafsa will be absent from school on the Thursday or Friday that is Eid-ul-Fitr. I would appreciate if you could give Hafsa her schoolwork in advance for that day, so that she does not miss any important work during her absence.

If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me in the daytime at my office at (123) 555-7890 or in the evenings after 7 p.m. at home at (123) 555-3456.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Ms. Nadia Sheikh

Comment: what a wonderful letter...I never post comments on sites but I had to this time for the main reason that so much of the time many people just assume that the person next to them knows what's going on. If i only knew background on half of my students I could reach them better...I feel people think I am being nosy...but I'm only trying to do my job and reach every student in the way that's best for them.... what a wonderful parent letter. It warms my heart to read that there's hope yet still.

Comment: Thank you for helping Muslim families communicate effectively with teachers. As a teacher, I am always grateful to parents who are willing to help me understand the individual needs of my students. So often, we (non-Muslim teachers) are eager to be supportive of Muslim students, but we need to be educated about how we can best do so. This is a respectful, informative, helpful letter and is perfectly appropriate for students of any age (K-12). If your child has more than one teacher, you would simply need to send copies of the letter to each teacher. Thank you, again. This site represents a tremendous service of love and brotherhood to the community.

Comment: Alhamdilliah this letter will help alot of people at school to get off Eid. Also I think we as muslims in the west are starting to stand up for ourselfs and defend our selfs after sleeping for decades. Allah is the greatest.

Comment: Mashallah it's a good letter, which I used myself this year. Was wondering if someone can advise how to handle higher grades (6th onwards) who don't have a regular class teacher.

Comment: Alhamdulillah...that letter is worded beautifully. As an American convert whose mother is an elementary school teacher, I cannot think of better wording for such a letter insha'Allah. Allahu alim. May Allah(swt) accept all our prayers and our fasting this and each Ramadan. Ameen.
