Rural poverty in developing countries has escaped all solutions. Most of the proposals revolve around providing access for the poor to arable land, modern technology, improved inputs and easy credit. But they ignore the inhibiting role of the interest-bearing finance in fighting rural poverty. This study suggests a number of innovative proposals to provide interest-free finance for rural developmen. It shows how Islamic banks can play an active role in improving the lot of the rural poor.
AuthorBio: Muhammad Akram Khan graduated from Punjab University(Pakistan) in 1967 and finished his masters in Industrial Administration in 1970 from the University of Aston, England. Since 1970, he has held various positions in government of Pakistan. A noted scholar of Islamic economics, he has published numerous books, papers and monographs.
