The CAIR Report: the year in review

Last April, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights group, issued its yearly report on anti-Muslim intolerance and bias in America entitled "Stereotypes and Civil Liberties." Its findings provide critical information about how Muslims in this country fared post-9/11. Not surprisingly, the news is not good.

CAIR reports that anti-Muslim incidents between March 2001 and March 2002 increased three-fold over the previous year, when there were 366 validated reports of these incidents versus a whopping 1125 this year. In all, over 1500 reports of denial of religious accommodation, harassment, discrimination, bias, threat, assault, and even several murders are outlined in the report.

In addition, the study indicates that almost 60,000 American Muslims have been negatively impacted by U.S. government policies since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

CAIR's study notes that the majority of violent incidents occurred in the period immediately following the September 11 attacks. If post 9-11 backlash incidents are eliminated from the count, the remaining reports (525) still show a 43 percent increase over the 2001 study.

Muslims have also suffered civil rights violations at the hands of the government. Some1,200 Muslims who were detained nationwide, mostly on immigration charges, were treated as if they were terrorists. Also, 5,000 legal visa-holders were asked to submit to "voluntary" interrogations, and an estimated 50,000 individuals who donated to American Muslim relief agencies found these organizations shut down by the government, putting their money not in the hands of the poor, but instead, in limbo.

Surah Ayah
Something to Ask...
O Allah!
I ask You by every name that You have, that You have called Yourself by, that You have taught any of Your Creation, that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You may have kept secret with Yourself.
Make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my breast, the dispeller of my sorrows, the eraser of my anxieties and worries.
