in the Hardest Hit Areas of Indonesia
In response to the earthquake and Tsunami
in Aceh, Muhammadiyah has been deeply involved in the relief operation
as a mass-based organisation.
WORK DONE SO FAR:
As of today, we have done the following:
1. We have set up a large Relief Centre at the University
of Muhammadiyah in Banda Aceh on 28 December. Alhamdulillah, the University,
a four storey building, was not hit by the earthquake or Tsunami.
2. We have dispatched 150 volunteers to Banda Aceh
on 30st December, and on 31st December they have
begun evacuated the corpses from around the Grand Mosque (thousands
more corpses are still there around the city)
3. We have set up a number of public soup kitchens
at MuhammadiyahÕs Relief Centre.
4. We have begun to send in medical supplies, food,
and clothes to Aceh.
5. We are receiving and packing hundreds of tons of
foods and clothes donated by the people in Jakarta, to be sent to Aceh.

STAGES OF OPERATION
FIRST STAGE (31 December to 5 January)
1. Setting up a Relief Centre Post in Banda Aceh,
Meulaboh (West Aceh), and Lhokseumawe (North Aceh)
2. Evacuation of corpses from the streets
3. Cleaning the Grand Mosque
4. Setting up a medical centre at the University of
Muhammadiyah (Hospitals in the provinces are devastated)
5. Assessing the situation and location of the internally
displaced persons
6. Restoring the transportation from the airport to
the city, to enable us to bring our medical supplies, foods, and other
goods, into the relief centre and distribute them to the people in need.
SECOND STAGE (6-13 January 2005)
1. Setting up refugee shelters and camps
2. Organising the IDPs into the shelters
3. Setting up the logistic distribution system
4. building sanitation system for the IDPs shelters
5. Providing medical services
6. Setting-up a sattalite-based radio station at our
Relief Centre and provide receivers in the IDPs shelters, to eneble
them to receive information
THIRD STAGE (14 January-onward)
1. Providing post-disaster trauma counselling, especially
to woman and children
2. Providing medical services
3. Setting up children activity centres (for education)
4. Providing social workers
5. Cleaning up the city
6. Tracing the lost family

WHAT IS MUHAMMADIYAH?
Muhammadiyah was founded in 1912 in Yogyakarta
and has now developed into a mass-based Islamic organisation with approximately
30 million members. MuhammadiyahÕs main activities are among others
religious teaching, education, health services, social services,
and economic empowerment.
In the field of education, Muhammadiyah
has 6,728 primary schools, 3,279 junior high schools, 2, 776 senior
high schools, 32 Islamic boarding schools, and 166 universities.
In the field of health services, we have
and manage 47 general hospitals, 70 maternity hospitals, 217 child health
clinics, and 62 unit medical traning facilities.
In the field of social services, we manages
300 orphanages, 161 family cares centres, 43 social walfare institutions,
38 funeral services, and 18 nursing homes for the elderly.
Muhammadiyah also manages more than 15,
000 mosques.
