Building Bridges Between Faith Communities
Following the backlash of 9/11, it was the devoted faith communities of North America who stood up in the moral support of their Muslim brethren. Open house events at Mosques around the USA were attended in large numbers by neighbors mobilized from their own church communities. What are the ìdoís and donítsî of relating to other faith communities? Dawud Wharnsby Ali talks openly about the challenges and opportunities of working with other faith communities.
Dawud Wharnsby Ali altered his career as a musician and songwriter when he embraced Islam in 1993. Opting to focus his writing on songs with a spiritual message, his most recent recordings have begun helping young and old alike better understand their faith in a way that is both meaningful and enjoyable. Wharnsby-Ali has sought to provide music with an Islamic message of peace and remembrance of God as an alternative to mainstream music.
Building Bridges in Our Neighborhoods
Muslims shouldnít just live in their neighborhoods, but actively participate. Whatever the cause, whether it be a town council, a neighborhood watch, or just a friendly get together, Muslims should build bridges of understanding by getting involved with fellow members of their community. Sometimes itís difficult to break the ice with people who donít seem to have a lot in common with you, but this is one of our jobs as Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made no distinction between Muslims and non-Muslims when he was instructed to uphold the rights of neighbors.
Safa Zarzour is the principal of Universal School in Bridgeview, Illinois, the president of CAIR's Chicago branch, and an elected official in the Bridgeview city council.
Building Bridges at School
School is where the future is made. Students of today will become the leaders of tomorrow, whether at the local, state, or national level. The values, ideas, even likes and dislikes that are established in schools are going to shape the policies of the United States, and other nations as well, in the not-so-distant future. The U.S. is the leader of todayís dominant civilization. It is important, therefor; for Muslim students to affect their peers in a positive way, by being good citizens, and by developing strong relationships with the faculty of their schools, as well as with their classmates.
Abdul Malik Mujahid is an Islamic scholar by training. He is also a political scientist, an imam in Chicago, and the founder of Sound Vision.
Building Bridges at the Work Place
Many people find greater opportunity relating personally to others at their work place than in their local neighborhoods. Sports and the latest movies do not have to be the only topic of conversation around the water cooler or lunch-room table. Our job environments often provide an excellent opportunity to relate and connect with people around us on a spiritual level. The Quranic category of ìsahibe biljambeî - the ìperson next to youî - actually makes your co-workers among those neighbors who have rights upon you. In this lecture video, Dawud Wharnsby Ali focuses on the ìdo's and donítsî of sharing a message of faith with co-workers in the work-place environment.

These lectures are supplemented with a follow-up discussion, lead by Abdul Malik Mujahid, featuring Safaa Zarzour, Hannah El-Amin, and Dawud Wharnsby Ali. Building bridges of understanding between faith communities will, insh-Allah, bring out the best of all believers as they strive to please The Creator by serving humanity.

| Something to Ask... | O Allah! I ask You by every name that You have, that You have called Yourself by, that You have taught any of Your Creation, that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You may have kept secret with Yourself. Make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my breast, the dispeller of my sorrows, the eraser of my anxieties and worries. |
