5 Muslim Women Pioneers You Should Know; Women’s History Month

In this newsletter

Assalamu alaikum:

“Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.”

-Quran 33:35

In the Quran, Allah establishes the inherent dignity of women as the above-quoted verse, and others, make clear. This dignity is independent of external factors, ranging from how a woman looks to whether or not she is married, or whether or not she has children. God has honored women as His Creation, just as He has men.

Allah also establishes that superiority is based on piety for all human beings (Quran 49:13), and that the deeds of both genders are rewarded or punished equally: “Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause them to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do” (16:97). Notice the inclusion of the words “male or female” in this verse.

Women’s History Month, which begins March 1, is a time to learn about and share women’s contributions the world over. In every field, women have changed the world, adding their unique talents and skills to improve life for and advance humanity, be it the doctors and nurses working in the medical field, as this COVID-19 pandemic has shown us, the teachers who are teaching despite the tremendous challenges presented by remote learning, to the mothers juggling all kinds of responsibilities as they grapple with COVID’s numerous burdens.

Muslim women are no different. We encourage you to seek, learn about, and share what you know and what you learn about the incredible things women have and continue to do for all of humanity this month with your families, neighbors, and communities.

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said, that a person who does not thank people does not thank Allah. That includes the countless women who have touched, inspired, and influenced us to be better in every aspect of our lives.

Peace,

5 Muslim Women Who Built the North American Muslim Community

As was the case centuries before, Muslim women have been at the forefront of establishing the Muslim community and retaining its practice, traditions, institutions, and heritage. Here are five Muslim women you should know who built today’s North American Muslim community (in alphabetical order).

Debra Dirks speech on Islam and women
This is a talk by writer and former Mennonite Debra Dirks to Muslim women who have converted to the faith, and their mothers who are not Muslim. It aims to explain some of the basic tenets of Islam and women’s place in it.

10 ways to keep young Muslim women connected to the faith & community

You may have already heard the stories: a Muslim woman refuses to come to the Masjid anymore after Speaker X makes a negative comment about women; an educated, professional woman refuses to participate in any more community meetings because she is expected to clean up afterwards simply because she is a woman. Muslim women are leaving the community and in some cases, the faith. Here are some ways we can retain half of the community, as our beloved Prophet did.
