As our Masjids and Islamic centres become deserted over the next few days due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it’s a golden opportunity for community organization and Masjid boards, managements, Imams, and volunteers to think out of the box.

As four-fifths of the Masjids in North America are located in a metropolitan area, they must be aware of the extraordinary efforts made by other faith groups to offer social services to the metro communities beyond their own congregation. It is the call of Islam to serve all in need, not just Muslims.

Young Muslims are in crisis. Not only are they experiencing the normal ups and downs emotionally and physically, they are also dealing with tremenous anti-Muslim prejudice. These are suggested ways Imams can help. 

The idea of "social services" puts off some because of misunderstandings about what this type of service means in practical terms. Here are ten misperceptions clarified about this necessary assistance for individuals, families, and entire communities.
