Hispanic Heritage Month was created in 1968. It was originally a Hispanic Heritage Week! President Lyndon B. Johnson first started this celebrative week, and 20 years later, in 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration to last a full month.
Is there a significance in the dates?
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th. September 15th is important because this day marks the independence of many Latin American countries such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. In fact, the entire week following September 15th is full of independence days, with the Mexican Independence Day taking place on September 16th and the Chilean Independence Day on September 18th.
What is the difference between “Hispanic” and “Latino?”
Although these two terms have similar meanings, there is a difference. The word “Hispanic” is used to describe a person from a Spanish-speaking country, while “Latino” is used to describe a person from a Latin American country (Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean), some of which are not Spanish-speaking. It is important to note that while a person may be Hispanic, it does not always mean that they are Latino as well, and vice versa. Contrary to what you might think, Hispanic Heritage Month is for more than just people of Hispanic descent. Hispanic heritage is directly linked to Spanish history and thus related to Islamic history as well. In addition, the fastest-growing population of Muslim converts is of Latino origin. Because of this, it is important to recognize our fellow Muslims’ culture and show appreciation.
How has Islam impacted Hispanic countries?
Islam has had a ton of influence on Hispanic culture. Historically, one of the most influential kingdoms in Europe was Al-Andalus, in modern-day Spain. Most of the Iberian peninsula, including Spain and Portugal, was under Muslim rule for nearly 800 years. Islamic Spain is renowned for a multitude of advancements, including sociopolitical, agricultural, and scientific. Muslim rulers guaranteed religious freedom for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, offered educational opportunities, and translated numerous classical texts that helped awaken the European Renaissance. Islamic terms have also made their way into the Spanish language, with phrases such as “Ojala,” translated to God willing, having an Arabic origin.
How do we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?
There are many ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Many cities host events related to Hispanic culture, such as festivals, parades, and even museum exhibitions! However, if you would like to celebrate by yourself, the easiest way is to read, research, and explore this magnificent heritage that is made up of many cultures and traditions.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a way for people to unite and celebrate the accomplishments of Hispanic/Latin Americans. It is a way for us to learn and appreciate the richness of Hispanic cultures.
