On the surface, the party has all the trappings of a traditional prom: Fancy dresses, fancy food, and fancy footwork on the dance floor. But two key components are missing: boys and alcohol. 

What is Prom? The prom is a yearly social event commemorating students' completion of high school. But it is far from celebrating academic achievement. It is the ultimate event of the teen social scene.

Sound Vision spoke to four young Muslim men and women about how parents can effectively discuss the prom with their children. Below are some of their and our tips and suggestions.

The prom is not just a "teen" issue or a "family" issue. It's a Muslim community concern. It needs to be addressed from an Islamic perspective by parents and respected community members. There are a number of ways communities can address this problem.

The prom is held annually to celebrate the completion of high school. It usually takes place in May. In some schools, there is a junior (after grade 11) and a senior prom (after grade 12). In others, it is only held at the end of twelfth grad.

You've resigned yourself to the fact that you aren't going to the prom. It took a lot of heated discussion with your parents and Muslim friends, but you've finally made that decision: you're not going. If only it were that easy.

Happiness! Ah what a wonderful term, wouldn't all of us like to have that? I think it's the only thing that we need in life. How can we achieve happiness in the life hereafter after as well as in this life?
