Assalamu alaikum:
Prophet Muhammad, God’s peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Take advantage of five before five: Your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your riches before your poverty, your free time before your work, and your life before your death” (Al-Hakim, Sahih).
Which of these blessings that the Prophet talked about in the above Hadith will we waste this Ramadan?
Is it food/riches? Time? Health? Or all of them?
According to EcoMena, a not-for-profit group that raises environmental awareness in the Middle East, about one-fifth of the food purchased or prepared during Ramadan ends up in the waste bin. Unfortunately, the data suggests the amount of food waste is even slightly higher during the holy month.
In the United States, people spend two hours and three minutes on social media each day. That’s time taken away from doing far more productive activities even outside Ramadan, when every minute counts more than ever.
We can plan for better food and time usage, as we should. But we also need to ask ourselves what we need to cut out of our lives to replace with superior alternatives. We do not know if this coming Ramadan will be our last one. We don’t even know if we will make it to the one we are anticipating next week.
May Allah allow us to reach this Ramadan and many more. And may this Ramadan be one of zero waste of any of His blessings.
Peace,
Sound Vision Team
